(86.5 = very good to excellent whiskies definitely worth buying.) nose 20.5 taste 22.5 finish 21.5 balance 22. Despite the limitations of the cask, this is sweet and malty and at times the chocolate fudge hits the spots. You fancy a bit of smoke has crept in there, too. (Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2012)
La distillerie Bowmore
Capitale de l’île d’Islay, la distillerie Bowmore se situe pratiquement en son centre, sur le Loch Indaal. Elle possède une église très originale, car toute ronde, “afin que le diable ne vienne pas se loger dans un coin”. Signe de l’importance du whisky, l’école elle-même est dotée de cheminées en forme de pagodes. La distillerie Bowmore est installée au bord du loch, et un de ses chais est même situé en dessous du niveau de la mer.
Il est dit souvent que Bowmore représente une transition entre les malts très tourbés du sud d’Islay (Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig), et ceux plus doux du nord (Bunnhahabhain, Bruichladdich, et Caol Ila par certains côtés).
Géographiquement et gustativement, les whiskys de Bowmore sont à mi-chemin entre les malts intenses de la côte sud et ceux du nord, plus légers.

The Brand Old Masters
James MacArthur was established in 1982 with the aim of selecting whiskys from Scottish Distilleries which were either not very well known or had ceased to operate and bottling them at cask strength, thus introducing whisky drinkers to distilleries they had never heard of.
This policy has been continued, with top quality single barrel bottlings from a wide selection of distilleries. whiskys are currently bottled at ages ranging from 10 years to 30 years and at both cask strength and 45%vol. These are fine examples of the quality and variety available from each whisky producing region and the Company has won several awards over the years for its bottlings, both internationally and in the UK. Our bottlings are also well received by Jim Murray in the Whisky Bible, the Spirit Journal in the U.S.A. and by Malt Maniacs in Europe.
Cask strength whiskys (Old Masters) are bottled at natural strength and without the whisky having been chill-filtered or having colour added.
The 45% bottlings (Fine Malt Selection), although reduced in strength, are similarly non chill-filtered and have no added colour. The aim is to offer a product which is as natural as possible and which retains its original characteristics and flavours.
There are eight distilleries on the island o f Islay. Their products are among the strongest of all malts, a property that made it successful for some and disgusts others. The eight distilleries are Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. Port Ellen distillery was closed in 1983 and is used as a malt-house for other distilleries.
