Un merveilleux apéritif … et un superbe verre.

La distillerie Lochside

Lochside produced outstanding whisky and the distillery building itself was one of the most striking in Scotland. Yet by the time this book is published the building may well have been flattened and the whisky gone without trace, except among a few aficionados who have managed to hoard a few bottles of Lochside single malt.

Lochside was originally built as brewery back in the 1890s in the towering Germanic Brauhaus style of the era. It stood on the site of an earlier brewery which is said to have dated back in the 1700s and which drew its water from artesian wells under the site. The new brewery ( later distillery) building covered several acres beside the Montrose Basin and in its heydays, its sheer cream-washed walls and stinking tower made it the most visible landmark for mils around.

With their landscapes, high mountains, abundant lakes and all the islands off the coast, the Highlands are one of the most varied and spectacular regions in Scotland.
Whiskies from the Highlands are generally more sustained and stronger than those from Speyside. They have very varied tastes according to the place of production. Lightly peated and coastal flavours in the north, malty and fruity in the south.

Notes de dégustation

Lochside 02.1967/2016 The Cooper’s Choice, 49y, Bourbon Cask 806, 40.5%, 425 bottles

Color: copper.
Nose: The nose is very fine with a direct smooth and melted flavors that blend into a certain harmony. Notes of fruit tree honey, apricot, mandarin and syrup. There is also a touch of wet fern from time to time. The nose continues to evolve over the time with fruity notes and apricot tree flower.
Palate: The notes of blossom honey and sweet mandarin juice dominate. There are also flavors of fruit apricot. It is a harmonious marriage. This mouth is obviously very easy to access and not alcoholic at all due to the low alcohol content.
Final: The final is short. The mandarin continues to flow in waves. Notes of grape and raspberry with a pinch of sweet spices.
Verdict: What a delicacy! How sweet! Impossible not to love this whisky (or you must be even more demanding than me). A sweet from the beginning to the end and dangerously drinkable. Every sip calls the next one. It lacks just a few % of alcohol to be perfect. 91/100 (very close to 92).
